Under construction, but here goes (and I’m hoping more experienced hands will add comments about “working smarter, not harder,” to do what I did in these trial-and-error screencasts!):
1. How to buy a domain name, a webhost server plan, and set up your own website:
2. Here we downloaded the WordPress MU software (NOTE: if you want to blog on only one blog, use WordPress’s latest version, not WordPress MU, which is for “multiple users”), but had to stop for 24 hours while PowWeb sets up our webhosting account. (I can’t recommend Powweb enough, by the way. Their instant chat support service is fantastic.)
3. Step by bumpy step as a newbie points his domain name from GoDaddy to his host server’s nameservers - only to discover Powweb GIVES you a domain name with your account), then installs WordPress on the new Project Global Cooling website. We’re still not finished, but we’re getting there!
4. Here we run through setting up FTP, using FTP to transfer files from your computer to the remote host server, and then we install the WordPress theme we used on our old blog onto the new server.

Perhaps you’ve tried it already & find screencast-o-matic superior, but if not you may want to check out Jing at http://www.jingproject.com for capturing video of your screen. In the meantime, I’m going to check out Screencast-O-Matic to see if I like it…

Just a tip. If you use Dreamhost you can be up and running with a fully managed WP installation in minutes. If you want more control you can opt for the advanced (but still quick and easy) install. You can have as many as you want on as many subdomains (eg: mywpblog.mydomain.com) as you like.
(And don’t listen to the moaners about DH. I’ve been with them for years and they re cheap and as reliable as any other hosts I’ve used, and that includes PowWeb)
