Using Flock and Split Screen to Give Feedback

Just a quickie to share a new discovery: I just switched to Flock from Firefox - which I loved, but has been way too buggy lately - and I find it feels just like Firefox, but faster and more stable. Better still, I found a new addon called Split Browser (see a monster list of Flock addons here) that allows me to split my browser window. I know this isn’t new - I used a similar thing years ago when I was a PC user - but I’d somehow forgotten how useful this function could be.

An example: Say you’re reading a a long forum entry on Ning, and you want to be able to reply to it as you read. You can’t do that easily in one browser (and yes, you could simply open another window, but that’s clunky). By splitting my Flock window, it’s easy. Clay,

I’m trying it again. Flock use to be my default browser. There was so much I loved about it, the ease at which I was able to interact with the web. But it seemed to take for ever that load popout pages, and so I went back to FireFox, finding extensions that gave me almost all of the functionality that I’d enjoyed with Flock.

Interestingly, I blogged about my switch back then, and received a comment from one of the programmers of Flock acknowledging that this was one of the problems they were working on.

Anyway, when you said Flock was “faster and more stable,” well, I decided to give it another try. There’s a bit of frust going on, but also the excitement of discovering new features, and deciding which are fluff to me, and which actually help me do my job.

One thing I’d add to the feature wish list is the ability to search, through the media stream, for Flickr images with Creative Commons licenses.

Nice tip Clay and thanks for the pointer. A quick update ~ Flock replied via Twitter last night and provided me with an email address to contact re the bug. Excellent, eh?

@David: Just found an interesting CC/Flickr search page at Compfight.com. And shouldn’t we be able to add a CC search engine to Flock search, just like we could to FF?

@Clay I believe all FF plug-ins work in Flock. Give it a try re CC Search, Cheers, John. ^_^

Yes indeedy, the CC search engine for FF works in Flock too. Just install from the FF addons/search engines page.

I know that’s not precisely what you wished for, David, but it at least adds the same functionality we get from FF to Flock.
