Shift Happens: Must-See Short Videos on 21st Century Changes

You’re seeing a lot of Karl Fisch’s ideas here recently because I’m combing through his “best posts of 2006″ list on his blog, the Fischbowl (link in my blogroll, lower right column).
Karl made a video (instead of talking at staff in a beginning-of-the-year faculty meeting) called “Did You Know?” that does an excellent job of communicating what a different world our students will compete in. It’s hard for many of us to understand, but as teachers, I would argue it’s nonetheless our duty to our students.
If you’ve been wanting to read Friedman’s much-discussedThe World is Flat, but haven’t found the time, Karl’s videos do a good job of hitting the main points. As Karl says, “Shift Happens.” I would quibble and say it’s already happened.
The first video, “Did You Know?”, was apparently so successful it bred two sequels. Number 2, “What if?”, is less vital than “Did You Know?”, but good for a chuckle about how wrong and reactionary we all can be. For now, here’s the first. If you’re out there (especially at my school), please leave a comment so we can have a networked, public discussion of this–and please, please, please, break the 20th century email habit by just responding here. SHARE YOUR IDEAS WITH THE COMMUNITY, NOT JUST ME.
Here’s they are (watch the first one if you don’t have time to watch all three!):
1. Did You Know?
2. What if…?
And here’s number 3, “20/20 Vision,” envisioning the high school graduation ceremony of this year’s kindergardeners in the “even more beyond school” year of 2020. Karl taught himself how to post to Google video so his product could be embedded on other websites like this one. (And notice the new form of literacy this video represents. It’s still written, but also spoken, imaged, and technologized and published. Our kids should be learning these easy skills!)
